INVESTIGATION INTO MOTIVATING FACTORS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS’ DISCIPLINE AND JOB EFFECTIVENESS IN BRIKAMA CLUSTER, THE GAMBIA

This study investigated motivating factors of secondary school teachers’ discipline and job effectiveness in Brikama cluster, region two west, The Gambia. The work identified intrinsic and extrinsic motivating elements of secondary school teachers, which influence their discipline and job effectiveness to ensure students compliance and cooperation, for effective job delivery thereby, enhancing improved students’ academic performance.
A descriptive survey research design was used. The population covered four hundred and eight (408) teachers from five secondary schools. Simple random sampling method was used to select 323 teachers as sample size. Questionnaires were administered to respondents and the collected data analysed.
The findings of the study revealed that there was significant combined contribution of independent variables (motivating factors (intrinsic and extrinsic factors)) on dependent variable (teachers’ discipline); R = 0.675, P < .05, as well as independent variables (motivating factors (intrinsic and extrinsic factors) on dependent variable (teachers’ job effectiveness); R = 0.692, P < .05. This study concluded that intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors influenced secondary school teachers’ discipline and job effectiveness in Brikama cluster. The study recommended that government and school management provide additional motivational incentives.
